Presenting mode

Draft · describes Presenting mode as it is in Crew 0.2.1.

Presenting mode is for streaming, recording or sharing your screen with Crew open. It hides emails, accounts, keys, costs and anything you haven’t marked public, in every Crew window, the menu bar and notifications. It covers Crew’s own windows only: other apps on your screen show as they are. In Crew 0.2.1 a few places are only partly covered; they’re listed below, with what to do.

Before you go live

1. Clear Notification Center. Crew holds new notifications while you present, but one that was already on screen before you turned Presenting on can still be there.
2. Add people to Settings › Presenting › Always hidden: other founders and people you work with, one name per line. Crew hides them wherever it scans text, along with every account, seat and private project it already knows. You can’t change this list while presenting, so do it first.
3. Plan to talk in your Chief of Staff’s conversation. It stays visible, with the key and address shapes Crew recognises hidden. Other conversations and terminals stay covered until you choose Show on Stream for them.
4. Don’t open Settings › Chief of Staff while presenting: its name field shows the name as it is. Don’t run Crew’s first-run setup on stream either: its fields show what you type, including your name, company and account.
5. If VoiceOver is on and your stream captures sound, turn VoiceOver off. Hiding is visual, and VoiceOver still reads hidden values aloud.
6. Try Blank Crew once (⌃⌥⌘B), so your hand knows the key.

Turning it on

Use View › Presenting Mode (⌃⌘P), the switch in Crew’s menu bar item, or Settings › Presenting. Presenting turns on at once with everything private, then Crew asks what’s Public on Stream: tick what viewers may see and choose Go Live. Everything else shows as bars, and keys, emails and other founders are always hidden. Everything Private unticks them all. Cancel keeps Presenting on, with everything private. The Shortcuts action “Set Presenting Mode” doesn’t ask: it uses your last choices.

While it’s on, Crew’s menu bar item reads LIVE, and Crew’s main window shows a Presenting badge in its toolbar. Presenting stays on until you turn it off, including after Crew restarts.

While you present

• Terminals and other conversations are blurred and covered. To show one, choose Show on Stream… and confirm. For a terminal, viewers will see everything it prints, keys included. For a conversation, Crew still hides the key and address shapes it recognises. Either way, it’s hidden again when Presenting turns off.
• Notifications wait until you stop presenting.
• Tooltips, menus and error alerts hide the keys, addresses and names Crew knows. Other text in them can still show, such as a name Crew doesn’t know or a file path in an error message. Fill in Always hidden, and if an error alert appears, close it with OK: Blank Crew doesn’t cover an alert.

If something private is about to show

Press ⌃⌥⌘B, or choose Blank in Crew’s menu bar item. Every Crew window is covered at once. The cover goes over the window’s contents, so close any alert that’s open. Pressing it again asks Show Crew again?, and Keep Blank is the default. The cover stays even if you turn Presenting off, until you choose Show Crew.

Stream Deck and Shortcuts

A Stream Deck can send ⌃⌘P and ⌃⌥⌘B, or run the Shortcuts actions “Set Presenting Mode” and “Blank Crew”. Both are menu items, so you can change the keys in System Settings › Keyboard › App Shortcuts.

Turning it off

Press ⌃⌘P again, or use the menu bar switch or Settings. Held notifications arrive, and any terminal or conversation you showed is hidden again next time.
