Reconnecting to Crew

Crew on this Mac is the background service that your widgets and your chat read from. When it stops answering, Crew keeps what it last read and tells you where it can't read any more. There's no stack of connection banners.

On your dashboard

A widget that can't reach Crew on this Mac says Crew on this Mac isn't answering. Where it still has an earlier reading, it shows that reading with as of and the time, so check the time before you treat it as current. It never shows a zero in place of a reading it doesn't have.

In the chat

A line at the top of the chat says what's happening:

Connecting… or Reconnecting… while Crew tries again by itself. Reconnect tries again now.
Talk unavailable, with the reason, when Crew can't reach it. Reconnect tries again.

You can also choose Talk › Reconnect. Reconnecting never resends a message or restarts a conversation.

You can keep reading and writing. If you press Return while the chat is away, nothing is sent: the message stays in the box with a line saying Not sent. Press Return again once it's back.

If Crew on this Mac didn't start

Open Crew › Settings… (⌘,), then General. The Crew on this Mac row says whether it's running. If it didn't start, choose Start Crew on this Mac; if Crew on this Mac is running but didn't accept this copy of Crew, Try Again checks again. The row says what to do next, for example checking that Crew on this Mac is on in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions.
