Post to X from Crew

Write a post in Crew, then post it on X yourself. In this version Crew never posts for you. It opens X’s own composer in your browser with your words filled in, and you choose Post there.

Write a post

Choose File › New Post on X… (⌥⇧⌘P). To start from something your Chief of Staff wrote, open the menu on a reply and choose Post on X….

• The counter shows how much room is left, counted the way X counts: a link counts as 23 characters, and most emoji count as 2.
• If the post is too long, choose Split into Thread. Crew breaks it at paragraphs, then sentences, and numbers each post. You can edit, add or remove posts.
• There's no account to pick in Crew. X posts from whichever account is signed in to x.com in your browser.

Drafts from your Chief

Your Chief of Staff can draft a post for you. It waits under From your Chief. Use Draft puts it in the editor for you to change; Dismiss lets it go. A draft never opens X on its own.

Post it

Choose Post on X. Your browser opens X’s composer with the text filled in. Check it, then choose Post there.

For a thread, X opens with the first post. After you post it, reply to it with each next post: Copy 2 of 3 and so on put them on the clipboard.

Images and clips

Choose Add Image or Clip…, or drop files on the composer. Crew copies them into its own folder and leaves your originals alone. Show in Finder opens that folder so you can drag the files into X’s composer. X takes up to 4 images or 1 clip per post; anything that won’t fit is named.

While you’re presenting

Your draft is hidden, and Post on X becomes Stop Presenting to Post on X, so nothing you’re writing shows on stream.

What stays on your Mac

In this version Crew doesn’t sign in to X, keep your X password, or send anything to X. Your draft is saved on this Mac (Application Support › Crew › Posts) and is still there after you quit Crew; Clear Draft empties it. Images and clips you add are copied to Crew’s own Application Support folder, in Posts.

Posting directly from Crew

This is not switched on in this version yet. When it is, you'll sign in to X from the Post window with X's own sign-in, and post without leaving Crew:

• Preview shows exactly what X will receive. Post sends only a preview that is still current; any edit, file, alt text or account change needs a new preview.
• Each image or clip gets an alt text line, which goes to X with it.
• Schedule… posts at a time you choose.

Your X sign-in stays with Crew on your Mac, in its Keychain. Nothing posts without your own click on Post or Schedule.

In a Crew built after 0.2.17, once direct posting is on, your Chief also suggests posts: a card under its reply with a draft, a Ready to post list, and Settings › Posts to X. Because direct posting isn't switched on in this version yet, you won't see them. A suggestion never posts on its own.
